Public Invited to Celebrate Mayflower Park Improvements

BLYTHE – Riverside County and City of Blythe officials invite the community to come out to Mayflower Park and celebrate the renovated boat launch ramp and dock, new restrooms and other improvements to this Blythe area county park.

A ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the recently completed upgrades to Mayflower Park will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. Refreshments will be provided.

One of eight regional parks managed by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, Mayflower Park is located along the banks of the Colorado River near Blythe at 4980 Colorado River Road. Popular activities at the park include boating, fishing, shuffleboard, horseshoes and picnics.

In an effort to improve access and enhance the experience for visitors, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors undertook a couple projects that total a $1.26 million investment into the park.

The first project renovated the park’s boat launch ramp, which had to be maintained and closed regularly due to low water levels. The project extended the ramp by 30 feet and added a boarding float dock system to assist park guests in loading and unloading their vessels.

As part of the project, the park district created Americans with Disabilities Act compliant walkways, improved the parking area and replaced the existing 40-year-old restroom with a new restroom and shower facility that is centrally located and energy-efficient.

The second project installed a new potable well to replace failing wells on-site, ensuring visitors have a reliable water source.

Approximately half of the funding is from a $620,000 grant the park district received from the California Boating and Waterways Commission in 2012. Construction began in January 2016 and was substantially completed in January 2017.

In 2011, the county completed $3.1 million in improvements to Mayflower Park. The project included an expanded RV storage area, paving at the entryway and maintenance building, and the addition of an entrance kiosk, maintenance building, three shade structures, water and electrical enhancements.

The ribbon cutting ceremony coincides with the 60th Annual Palo Verde Valley Outlook Conference, which will be held April 6 at the Colorado River Fairgrounds. The conference highlights past year accomplishments, with a look ahead to future progress. For more information about the conference, contact the Blythe Area Chamber of Commerce at 760 922 8166.
