State Budget Includes Additional Investment for CSUSB Palm Desert Campus

PALM DESERT – The 2017-2018 California state budget, signed into law by Gov. Brown on Tuesday, included an additional $3 million in one-time funding for the California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus (CSUSB Palm Desert Campus).

Assemblymembers Eduardo Garcia and Chad Mayes sought the funding, and were supported in their request by Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.

“This additional state investment will strengthen our region’s economy while helping more local students obtain higher education in our community,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez, a member of the Palm Desert Campus Advancement Board. “I was proud to strongly support the efforts by our state representatives, Assemblymembers Garcia and Mayes, and commend them on securing resources to help this vital campus serve more students now and into the near future.”

Dr. Sharon Brown-Welty, Dean of CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, pledged to work collaboratively with CSUSB and the Coachella Valley community to identify the best use of the additional funding to increase enrollment and build capacity at the campus.

“We at CSUSB and CSUSB Palm Desert Campus thank Assemblymember Garcia, Assemblymember Mayes and Supervisor Perez for their ongoing commitment to a university education for residents of the Coachella Valley,” said Dr. Brown-Welty. “CSUSB and the Palm Desert Campus will continue to support our Coachella Valley students and position them to make an impact on our community after graduation.”

“I applaud this significant budget win for our community and thank our regional partners for their support,” exclaimed Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. “We must continue to work together and advocate for additional resources to bring the CSUSB Palm Desert campus expansion plans to fruition. Investments in higher education serve as a catalyst for future prosperity. This infusion of state dollars will go a long way in boosting economic development and broadening educational opportunities within this region.”
